This role is based out of two of our locations one located at 40 Sandford Fleming Road, Collingwood, ON L9Y 4V7 and the other 1800 17th Street East, Owen Sound ON, Canada N4K 1Z4.
We are currently seeking a Health and Safety Manager, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer.
You will be responsible for all Health and Safety functions as it relates to our products and processes that are conducted and/or distributed by the Company in alignment with Health and Safety guidelines and compliance. This roll will lead teams and support all operations to achieve company objectives while leading and guiding on the appropriate health and safety practices. This roll will support the safety and effectiveness of our product and processes and meet business objectives in a compliant and timely manner.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Manage hazardous and special waste programs and profiles including audits/inspections, vendor compliance, documentation and recordkeeping
- Manage and develop technical aspects of safety, including the review, design and implementation of safety systems, processes and equipment
- Conduct risk assessments, safety audits, and the development of safety protocols
- Maintain positive, professional relationships with all regulators and government officials
- Manage all Health Canada permits, foreign registrations and records
- To assist with any other regulatory bodies as required
- Support the development, implementation, and management of site Health & Safety systems to ensure regulatory compliance
- Develop and implement site-specific H&S policies, training programs, and annual training calendars
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives
- Act as a primary contact for Ministry of Labour, WSIB, and external consultants
- Design and deliver advanced training programs (LOTO, Fall Arrest, WHMIS, Forklift, Crane, etc.).
- Manage WSIB claims, liaising with doctors, adjudicators, and employees
- Assist with safe and timely return-to-work plans, ensuring compliance with medical restrictions
- Lead investigations of serious incidents and analyze injury trends to eliminate root causes
- Present findings and recommendations
- Guide JHSC in pre-start reviews, lockout procedures, and hazard identification
- Ensure compliance with OHSA, WSIB, and other regulations through proactive audits and corrective actions
- Drive a proactive, interdependent safety culture across the organization
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
- Bachelor's Degree in chemical engineering, or health and safety or relevant field
- A minimum of + 6 years of experience in compliance and Health and Safety, Process Safety Management (PSM) and document management including experience with CSA Z767-24 requirements
- Experience in chemical plant operation, ideally with hydrogen or explosive gas systems, and an understanding of water electrolysis processes
- Strong background in analyzing technical documents, interpreting processes and procedures, regulations, and industry standards
- Experience in preparing regulatory submissions
- Strong data analysis and statistical aptitude
- Demonstrates effective communication with contractors, government staff, regulators, and internal staff at all levels
- A full understanding of applicable government regulatory bodies
- A strong commitment to regulatory compliance
- Strong knowledge of OHSA, WSIB, and applicable regulations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- You are flexible and adaptable with the ability to effectively prioritize tasks
- You are a mature self-starter who remains calm under pressure
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills and attention to detail is critical
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
